Comments from the Fire Chief

Dear Neighbor:

As part of our effort to keep the Ben Lomond community better informed about important safety issues, we'd like to kickoff a safe summer season with some valuable safety reminders to help you prepare your home for the hot, dry season. By taking a few simple precautions, you can significantly reduce the threat of fire to your home and property. You can also read about more local safety issues in our summer newsletter.

Summer Safety Tips

Check all home smoke detectors to ensure they are working. You can have as little as two minutes to escape if your home catches fire.

Keep the roof and area surrounding your home clear to reduce your risk of fire. Sweep gutters, roofs, and eaves regularly. Create a safety zone around your home by removing flammable plants, brush, woodpiles and debris.

Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use. Position it away from siding, deck railings, and out from under eaves and branches. In 2002, gas and charcoal grills caused 3,500 outdoor fires in or on home properties.

Leave fireworks to professionals. Fireworks can burn up to 1200º F and lead to burns, lacerations, and blindness.

Develop and practice a home fire escape plan. Walk through your home and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Make sure your family knows the escape plan.

Stop by the station for more information and feel free to call me anytime at 336-5495 with questions.

Sincerely,

Fire Chief John Charcho
